Compared to the simple cylindrical worm drive, the globoid (or throated) worm design significantly increases the contact area between the worm shaft and the teeth of the gear wheel, and therefore greatly improves load capacity and other performance parameters of the worm drive. Also, the throated worm shaft is much more aesthetically appealing, in our humble opinion. However, designing a throated worm is tricky, and designing the matching gear wheel is even trickier.
